What They Should Have Done - A Revised Chronology of the MPAA PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kelly Rush
Monday, 21 July 2008

The movie industry is in for some interesting times. Despite their best efforts, movie piracy has continued to grow at an unstoppable rate. On top of this, despite trying to push yet another generation of content forcing customers to re-buy all of their content, the market has shown that they are not interested. For all the effort and trouble the movie industry is going to, I think they need to ask themselves the question, "Is it all worth it?"

That's the question they're faced with now, but it didn't always have to be that way. There was a point in time where the movie industry could have taken a different path than the music industry chose to take. Let's take a look at this alternative history, a revised chronology of how the MPAA could have handled their industry in the age of the Internet, and compare it to how events really unfolded.

HD Video - 2008 Battle Creek Air Show PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kelly Rush
Thursday, 10 July 2008

This is a short music video montage I made of some of the cooler planes and stunts from the 2008 Battle Creek Air Show. Featured are the F-15 Eagle, F-18 Hornet, a few prop planes, and of course, the USAF Thunderbirds. The video was shot on a Canon HV30, and was edited in Adobe Premiere (some image correction tweaks, and the editing). The music is "Futurism" by the awesome Muse.

If you click the video and watch through YouTube, you can see the hi-res version. To see the actual HD version (720p), check the video out on Vimeo here.

Here are just a few quick shots from my new Canon Digital Rebel XT. I added a faux HDR effect to them, but soon I'll try some real HDR imaging (i.e. using multiple layered images with multiple exposure settings).

SnagIt 9 Videos PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kelly Rush
Saturday, 14 June 2008

In case you didn't know, SnagIt 9.0 was released this past week. Quite a relief to me, as that means I'm FINALLY done with about two months worth of video production for the product. I (along with our writer and a few graphic designers) put together two different videos, one showing off the features of SnagIt in general, the other showing of the new features of SnagIt 9.0. Check them out if you get a chance! For each video, go to the page, find the play button on the screenshot at the top, and click on it. The video will open in a thick box:

Some Interesting Questions, Regarding Digital Rights PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kelly Rush
Saturday, 10 May 2008

I've been thinking a lot about digital rights, as of late. For the most part, I'm fairly disgusted with how quickly and easily those that supposedly represent the people of the United States have sold away our rights and freedoms in the name of "protecting" the "rights" of corporations. I *LOVE* capitalism; no sarcasm at all. It has proven to be the absolutely most efficient and affective way to run an economy, allowing for the least amount of rapid and massive corruption by individuals or the state. That said, what the media industry is doing is not capitalism anymore. They've created, twisted, and contorted rules in such a way that they are no longer simply protecting their "rights" anymore, but simply being used to prop up an industry that long ago lost its drive and ingenuity, and now refuses to work to make a better product, hoping to stick to the status quo that has, for so long, delivered them massive amounts of success.

But I digress...

Vocal Covers - Muse PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kelly Rush
Monday, 21 April 2008

After Singsnap started losing its right to display songs that users had karaoke'd to (thanks a lot RIAA, you're awesome!), I decided to look for a different approach. I was able to get ahold of the instrumental versions of the songs off of Muse's album, "Absolution", so I hooked up my Digitech RP-80 effects pedal, ran my mic through it, and gave it a shot.
