So for a while now, I've been learning how to play most of the parts to most of Muse's songs. Drums and piano are easy enough, but Matt Bellamy uses a large number of effects for his guitar parts. I had been trying to use just a simple distortion pedal, which covered much of what he plays, but there are some effects that I just couldn't get. I did some research into what exactly the effect was that he was using (which sounded like sliding all the way up the frets, but without the interruption that comes between frets), and found that it comes courtesy of using a whammy pedal. I decided that I was going crazy enough trying to figure this out that I wanted to get a pedal that could do this. After doing some research, I found that there were some lower-end multi-effects pedals that seemed pretty capable.

I just got back from a concert at the Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Sterling Heights, MI. Lots of rubbish opening bands (main one was "Social Distortion", some band that thought they were Rage Against the Machine, I think they had some sort of a message or something, I wasn't paying attention), and then the headline act, Muse!

Ok, so I'm a huge old-school Final Fantasy fan (not much into the newer stuff, past VII). I've played and beaten Final Fantasy IV (or II in the US) probably five times. I recently upgraded my phone from a cheap-o throwaway to a Cingular 3125 (a.k.a. the HTC "StrTrk"), running Windows Mobile 5.0. This platform...somehow...lets you play older games from the NES and SNES...I'm not sure how, I think it is magic...anyway, I digress.

After mulling it over for the past few weeks, I finally garnered up the courage to install Compiz-Fusion, the successor to the very cool Beryl project. I was pretty worried I was going to screw it up, but somehow I got lucky and everything worked out fine. The basic process involved simply un-installing Beryl and Compiz from my computer, downloading and installing Compiz-Fusion, removing the Beryl entry from startup, and adding the line "compiz --replace -c emerald &" to the "Sessions" list. Everything is running fine now, and the new effects are pretty cool. Also, I updated to the latest unstable patch of Avant Window Navigator, to gain the reflection and angled glass effects, and that also worked, and looks fantastic (note that I had to do this via SVN, and then manually editing AWN's preferences in gconf-editor). Screenshots available if you click to read more...

I just had to give a little shout-out to Jing , a new application that TechSmith (the company I work for) is developing, and released as a public "project" today. It is a fantastic little application, that just does the job, and gets the heck out of the way. A one-sentence summary of its function is that it is a simple application that can quickly take a picture or video of your desktop, uploads it to a server, and then gives you a link, which you can then send to a friend, paste on a forum, etc. It is free to use for the time-being, so check it out! Oh, and as an added bonus, my second "Jing" ever will be a video recording of me typing this sentence into the news. After I save it, I will post the link under here. This is sort of like an Escher painting... Link to my Jing...

This is just a response that I posted to a Digg article , regarding Best Buy's "Geek Squad" service. I thought it might be an interesting read for anyone that is a computer novice, and was wondering what the best course of action would be for buying and maintaining a computer. This is just my personal suggestion, so feel free to take it or leave it.
